THE CHARACTER

Roderich Edelstein // Austria Application Violin

Name: Roderich Edelstein

Age: 25

Hometown: Vienna, Austria

Appearance: Roderich is a slender man of moderate height. There isn’t much remarkable about him. He has dark brown hair with one stubborn curl that he’s never been able to get to lay flat. His violet eyes are attentive to his surroundings, but hidden behind a pair of glasses. He has contacts, but he can’t stand how he looks with them so he just wears the glasses.

He always carries himself with a poise befitting a station he’s not had for some time. His clothing is always pressed, even when it is worn. His suits are shiny at the elbows and knees from wear, but he isn’t inclined to replace them any time soon. He keeps himself clean-shaven, which means that the small mole just below the left corner of his mouth is visible.

Personality: Roderich is a perfectionist, possibly tending towards a bit OCD. It helps him a great deal with organizing music and assigning parts in that respect. It does lead to a certain level of frustration on his part when he can’t get the cast or orchestra to do as they need to. He holds himself to high standards and expects the same of others around him.

He is very formal, he calls it professional, and rarely smiles more than a slight quirk of his lips. He prefers to spend his time with his music, rather than dealing with people, but is more than capable of working with others when required to—some days, even if he’s loathe to admit it, he looks forward to the interaction. He’s introverted and can be rather quiet. On the other hand if you irritate him you’re likely to receive a scathing look and a sarcastic remark. And don’t argue with him about music, it’s just never a good idea.

When he does let himself relax enough to be around friends (or even to make friends) he’s still quiet, but he’s much gentler. His tone softens and his posture relaxes. This is not a man who regularly shows emotion, but be assured that if he does it’s genuine.

He also has a habit of running his hands through his hair when thinking or frustrated, tending to cause his well-groomed locks to settle into disarray. When thinking he chews on the corner of the nail of his left little finger.

Likes:
Music (especially classical)—this is the one sort of music, besides his own compositions, that he feels truly expresses his emotions.

Time spent playing the piano and violin—nothing calms him down quite like it, though the violin goes neglected depending on his mood.

Visual art—he finds it beautiful, music in visual form is one way he describes it, though he can’t create it.

Pastries—comfort food, he especially likes cake.

The color blue—there really isn't any justification for it, he just likes the color.

Tea—it works almost as well as pastries and music for calming him down.

His violin—Three words: Do. Not. Touch. Roderich is extremely protective of this instrument and of three music books that he keeps with it.

Dislikes:
Arrogance—the irony of this tends to be lost on him, but he does try to keep his own ego in check.

Having to give directions or having to go someplace that requires directions—his internal compass has been broken for as long as he can remember, directions are a sure way to get him lost, and having him give you directions is a sure way to get yourself lost.

Failure—deeply rooted in his childhood, he cannot abide the thought of letting himself or anyone else down. Though he keeps it pretty well under-wraps this borders more on a fear.

Damage to his hands—sprains, breaks, cuts, scrapes ((Hey, slant rhyme…okay the lit. major in me will shut up now)), he puts a lot of importance on his ability to play music and damage to his hands would rather rapidly cut that option off. (again, this borders more on a fear, heading almost into a paranoia).

Job: Orchestral conductor and rehearsal pianist. In essence the musical director for the theatre.

Experience: Roderich trained in musical composition at a school in Vienna, he continued his training in musical composition, and eventually moved on to orchestral work. He’s acted as conductor both as a student and as a professional for going on 4 years now.

Extra details: None that I can think of at the moment.

Brief History: (Brief? Oh boy…my pushiest Hetalia muse has to keep his history brief. Alright, here goes)
Roderich was born in Vienna, Austria, to a banker and his young trophy wife. His father was always at work, and had no time for the boy except to critique him. He was too loud, he was too quiet, he smiled too much, he didn’t smile enough, he was ungrateful, he was kissing-up. Nothing he did seemed to please the man, but that didn’t stop the boy from trying his damndest. His mother never spoke up in his defense, and Roderich grew up resenting her for it. His father didn’t physically hit him, he didn’t need to. His words were enough. To this day a man in a position of authority says “Jump” and Roderich asks “How high?”

Roderich withdrew into his music at a very young age, learning early on that his words didn’t matter, but he couldn’t believe that his emotions didn’t. He found that the piano was his favorite instrument because they had one already and it meant he didn’t have to ever ask for one. He would ask for music for his birthday and Christmas, nothing else, just music. And sometimes, sometimes his father would actually get him some. His father saw the music as a frivolous waste of time, but it was the one rebellion that Roderich permitted himself.

By the time he was ten he could pick up almost any piece of music and sight read it nearly perfectly. It was at this point that he finally managed to ask, quietly but repeatedly, for a violin. It took a year before he finally wore away at his father enough that he got the instrument. He was expecting a cheaply made, child’s instrument that one could find at any music store. Instead what he received was the best violin they could afford—as they were far from poor it was quite the instrument—along with three books of music for it, to be worked through and up to. Roderich is extremely protective of that violin, as it is the only acknowledgment he has of affection from his father.

When Roderich reached High School age he turned his attention to music composition—not entirely neglecting the rest of his studies, but close. It became another point of contention between him and his father, but the youth refused to focus on Mathematics rather than music. His father wished him to go into banking, or business at the very least, but right out of Secondary school Roderich chose an academy where he could study music. He trained in orchestral work and found that his funding was cut off rather rapidly on his father’s part. Working his way through his last two years of University, Roderich graduated with his degree and went on to work with orchestral conduction and paid pianist positions. He briefly considered teaching music, but decided that he would probably end up strangling a student (or wishing to) and opted to remain in the position he preferred. He hasn’t spoken to his father since he went to University and, quite frankly, hopes never to.

RP Sample:
Roderich looked over the score for the play again. Really? They honestly thought this was a good idea? Oh, well, he wasn’t the director. If they thought they could pull it off then he’d go with it. Never mind that he’d been scattered for the last twenty-four hours, dealing with his landlord and a letter from his mother—oh how he hated it when she remembered his address. It was always easier when he didn’t have to recall the fact that he was living off of what felt like a pittance in comparison to what he had originally.

Fine, damn them. He’d go over the music tonight and see if he could get his ear accustomed to it in order to get the cast on key. He rose, closing the score and sliding it into the bag he carried before turning to leave the room. As long as he didn’t run into Beildschmidt he’d be fine.
